My transformative experience in the ISS-PBL program
Kioshana LaCount Burrell
As a doctoral student at The Ohio State University studying inclusive workforce development, my participation in the Inclusive Smart Society (ISS) Program has profoundly shaped both my academic journey and personal growth. The collaborative program between Ohio State and the University of Tsukuba provided a unique opportunity to explore how innovative technologies can create societies where people of diverse backgrounds—regardless of age, gender, region, language or disability—can equally thrive.
The ISS-PBL component was particularly valuable as it allowed me to work in mixed Japanese-American teams to address real-world challenges facing inclusive societies. Our project-based learning approach meant that theoretical concepts quickly transformed into practical applications, forcing us to consider diverse perspectives and cultural contexts when developing solutions.
What made this experience exceptional was the genuine cross-cultural collaboration. Working alongside Japanese students from the University of Tsukuba broadened my understanding of how inclusion is conceptualized differently across cultures. This insight has been invaluable to my doctoral research on inclusive workforce development, helping me recognize that effective solutions must account for cultural nuances and varying social structures.
The connections formed through this program have created pathways for future international research collaborations. The friendships built during project work, cultural exchange, and shared learning will undoubtedly continue to influence my academic career and personal worldview.
As I continue my doctoral studies, the ISS-PBL experience has reinforced my belief that building truly inclusive societies requires global cooperation, technological innovation, and deep cultural understanding. This program has equipped me with the skills, knowledge, and international network to contribute meaningfully to this important work. I hope that our universities continue to collaborate on more projects in the future, and that I one day have the opportunity to visit the University of Tsukuba.
