「世界最大級のコミックミュージアムに行ってみませんか？」その質問が本プログラムとの出会いでした。私は日本のマンガ文化とその翻訳に関心があり、それを知っていた教授がこの話を紹介してくれたのです。それからはトントン拍子に事が運び、気が付けばオハイオ州立大学に足を踏み入れていました。当初の目的であるミュージアム訪問では資料保管室を見せていただいたりマンガは研究に値する文化であるという意見に共感したりして自分が学びたいことへのモチベーションの向上につながりました。一方で印象に残ったのはより些細な日常の経験です。地元の本屋で英訳された日本のマンガを買ったら一冊二千円もして仰天しました。本に限らず円安の影響で食事を取るのも出費がかさみます。くだらない悩みですが、ニュースで見聞きしたような知識を実感の伴う体験に落とし込めたことには価値があると感じます。百聞は一見に如かず、みなさんも何かしらの体験を得るチャンスを活かしてみてはいかがでしょうか。
“Would you like to visit one of the world’s largest comic museums?” That was how I know this program. I’m interested in Japanese manga culture and its translation, and a professor who knew this introduced me. One thing led to another, and I was in Ohio State University. The initial purpose of visiting the museum led to an increase in my motivation to learn what I wanted, as I was shown the archives and found myself agreeing with the opinion that manga is a culture worthy of study. On the other hand, what left an impression on me were the more trivial experiences. I was astonished when I bought a translated Japanese manga at a local bookstore and it cost two thousand yen. Not just books, but foods and transportation fares were also expensive because of the exchange rate. It’s a trashy problem, but I believe it’s worthwhile. This experience turned what I’ve heard in the news into the real knowledge; and that’s awesome. As the saying goes, “seeing is believing,” and I encourage everyone to jump into this kind of opportunity.
