Exploring Accessibility: Conclusion Accessibility is inclusion
Hisae Miyauchi
Associate Professor, Faculty of Human Sciences, University of Tsukuba. Her research focuses on special needs education and education for students with visual impairments.
Danene Fast
Associate Professor at The Ohio State University. She studies visual impairments and mobility for people with disabilities.
Both professors specialize in education for individuals with visual impairments. Prof. Fast’s work aims to build environments where people with visual impairments can better access services. Guided by the idea that learning grows from both personal experience and understanding, her research focuses on three areas:
- Accessibility in transportation
- Educational services and accessibility in schools
- Addressing teacher shortages in visual impairment education
Here, accessibility takes on different meanings—from physical ease of movement, to the usability of educational services, to their overall availability.
During her ten-day visit to Tsukuba this March, Prof. Fast explored places such as a school for the blind in Gokokuji, Tokyo Disneyland, Mt. Tsukuba, the Tokyo National Museum, and Asakusa.
Excitedly showing photos on her phone, she spoke of Tokyo and Tsukuba’s advanced accessibility, noting that Japan is at the forefront of this field. For her, the world seems to be a place where learning, leisure, and research seamlessly come together^^.
Here, we share her “Japan explorations” through a video talk series with Prof. Miyauchi. Along with their insights, we hope you enjoy their clear and beautiful English!
