Dr. Rio Watanabe visited UT

From July 25th to 29th, Dr. Rio Watanabe from The Ohio State University visited the University of Tsukuba. Dr. Watanabe, a former professional golfer, earned her degree in Kinesiology at OSU and conducts research on topics such as Adapted Sports.
During her stay, she worked with Professor Takahiro Sato from the Institute of Health and Sport Sciences at UT to film lecture videos for “Introduction to Inclusive Smart Society II,” which will be offered in the upcoming fall semester. Additionally, at the ISS Summer Festival, which was held from July 27th for three days, Dr. Watanabe gave a lecture on modern golf.

Rio’s comment

1. About “Introduction to Inclusive Smart Society II”
Diversity and inclusion are being emphasized in today’s world. Looking at the future, the next crucial step is to understand how to effectively lead and communicate with a diverse group of people. Leading does not only mean pulling from the top but also sometimes supporting and lifting from the bottom. In this lecture, we discussed various leadership theories and communication strategies using DISC profiles through a dialogue with Professor Sato. The knowledge gained in this lecture will be useful as you lead and support in various situations and with diverse people in the future.

2. About ISS Summer Festival
Thank you for having me as a guest at the summer festival featuring the latest technology. During the live session, moderated by Dr. Modar, I shared insights on the current state of golf and my research alongside my mentor, Coach Therese Hession.
I believe that we are able to be involved in golf today because of the paths paved by the female and minoritized golfers of previous generations. I am honored to share our experiences at this event and pass on their social justice efforts to the next generation. Moving forward, I aim to promote diversity and inclusivity in golf, ensuring that future golfers can play in a better environment.
