OSU Winners of ISS Summer Festival 2025 Visit UT③

During my visit to Tsukuba and Tokyo, I had the opportunity to explore the concept of an Inclusive Smart Society through both academic and everyday experiences. We visited Miraikan, JAXA, and the Center for Cybernics Research, where I learned how advanced technologies are being developed to improve accessibility and quality of life. Through discussions with Professor Nagata on using sports for mental health and Professor Aranha’s lab on digital evolution, I was able to see how technology, people, and policy intersect in shaping a more inclusive society.

Outside of academic settings, I observed how these ideas are reflected in daily life. In places like Shibuya and Asakusa, I experienced Japanese culture and connected with local students through activities such as visiting an arcade and participating in an esports exchange. I also noticed how accessibility is integrated into infrastructure, including tactile paving for the visually impaired and self-driving chairs at the airport, as well as thoughtful design in everyday technology like automated restaurants and advanced public transportation systems.

Additionally, I toured University of Tsukuba’s sports facilities and engaged in discussions with the social welfare club about differences between social welfare and education systems in the United States and Japan. Overall, this experience helped me understand how innovation and cultural values work together to create inclusive systems, while also highlighting meaningful connections and differences between Japan and the United States in approaching technology, accessibility, and community.
